Extraction. Variable, parametric, gothic typeface

Stuff to go on tables and walls, posters books other stuff
I want to bring craft into a contemporary design practice. I am inspired by blackletter typefaces, originally used by scribes in books, letters, and manuscripts. Contemporary methods of making have reduced production time — for example, through typewriters, computer coding, and digital typesetting. The use of fonts has become globalised and increasingly liberal. To explore themes of resistance to globalisation and neoliberal growth, I hand-traced the blackletter typeface Gothicus Roman over a grid. Through this process, I created a pixelated, fixed-width, parametric contemporary typeface. This process felt like an extraction of the original form, leading to the name Extraction. To develop this further, I used the typeface to create a book that enables people to critique globalisation, particularly in relation to the climate crisis. The book contains tear-out posters designed for public engagement. I also created a type specimen that documents my process and showcases the typeface.
